Recreation
and Public Space Work
In Bushwick,
Brownsville, East New York and Bedford Stuyvesant, —many young people
do not have access to athletic facilities, cultural enrichment or
extracurricular activities after after school. Thus young people are
either trapped at home or in the streets and are in danger of
becoming victims of, or involved with crime.

EBC
leaders are working to increase the availability of supervised
recreational activities and facilities as well as public space in these
communities. They have also identified specific changes that will make
a significant difference:
- A
new community center/gym in Bushwick that will serve as badly needed
athletic space for EBC member high schools (Bushwick Leaders and EBC
Bushwick) as well as a facility for the whole community after school
hours.
- Upgrades
to the 142- acre Highland Park. A team of EBC leaders has made
significant progress in advocating for improvements to the park,
including recently winning $9.3 Million for the repair and upgrade of
paths around the park’s former reservoirs and planning for future
improvements. EBC leaders continue to work to ensure that current
Highland Park facilities are repaired and badly needed new fields,
paths and other facilities are built. Highland
Park Op Ed
- EBC
leaders seek opportunities to create and expand high quality after
school programs for Bushwick and other Brooklyn communities.
These campaigns have
also helped EBC develop scores of new leaders particularly among youth
and senior citizens. Fulfilling our most important goal, these
new leaders are playing a significant role on this issue, and are
taking power on other issues that affect their communities as well.
