Affordable Housing: Construction
and Preservation

East Brooklyn Congregations (EBC) is continuing to build on the organization’s long history of transforming communities by creating affordable housing.  In addition to building new owner occupied Nehemiah Housing, EBC is also building new affordable apartments and helping to preserve and improve existing housing.
New Nehemiah Housing: Spring Creek

EBC has completed construction of the first phase of 1,525 units of new Nehemiah owner- occupied homes at Spring Creek. Most new home-owners of the project’s first phase have already moved into their homes.  Further, construction on the second phase has progressed significantly as well.

The overall Spring Creek site will become a new Brooklyn community. In addition to  the 1,525 Nehemiah units (consisting of single-family, two-family, and four-story, eight-unit condos), four parks, a five-story school building (which will house two 6-12 schools), a supermarket, an EMS station, and other amenities will be created.

New Affordable Apartments

EBC has also built a 48-unit affordable Apartment building on Malta Street in East New York; construction has begun on the 104-unit Watkins Street affordable apartment building; and more progress has been made towards construction of other affordable apartments and cooperative units as well.

Further, EBC is working with Common Ground to build two other high quality affordable apartment buildings in Brownsville.

Affordable Housing Preservation

EBC tenant leaders have organized successfully to improve conditions at the 550 unit Riverdale Osborne Towers complex in Brownsville. Substantial improvements have been made, such as the repair of elevator that had been non-functional for over a decade, and the creation of new play yards for children. Serious problems remain, but they are finally being addressed.
